Post 3 - Linville

On page 36, William Kamkwamba writes "That same morning, instead of going straight to work, my father stopped by the church to see Reverend JJ."  He then continues to say that his father was like a completely new man than his mother had ever known.  Suddenly there was "lots of money for food and medicine for his kids."

Why is "The Pope" making this change now?  Why didn't he change earlier or when the Reverend first talked to him?  What took him so long to decided to change his ways?  What was his motivation for making himself a different man?

  1. He did not want to stay in/ go to prison, so he was made a deal with Mister Kabisa. The deal was that if he turned to God, Kabisa would tear up the Pope's criminal files. That night, he had a nightmare, or a dream depending on how you look at it, and in it, God said that he would be destroyed by his actions, or he would turn to God. He then completely changed, fearing that if he didn't, he would soon be lost forever.

  2. He never really thought about it a whole lot and didn't think it was all that bad but after all the advice and all of the thought he knew it was time to change. The real motivation was the dream he had the night before he desired to become a new man.

  3. The "Pope" only said he would turn to the lord to get out of jail. the "Pope" really turned to the lord after having a dream filled with darkness. In that dream the lord said to him "These things will destroy you. Turn to me" (Kamkwamba 36). Portraying this as a message from god he changed his ways and became a better
    parent/husband.

  4. He is just now making this change because he beat a guy up reallly bad and went to jail and the only way out was to turn to god. He didn't change earlier because he didn't really believe in god and ignored what the reverand was saying. It took so long because he had to get the dream he had that said it would destroy him. His motivation was the dream he had and turning to god to get out of jail.

  5. At first it was just to stay out of prison, because his good friend was willing to break him out this once. But after the dream, and all the messages and signs given to him, he realized they were too big of signs to ignore and turned his life over to god and became a new man.

  6. All he really wanted was to get out of jail. He didn't want all the God advice, he just wanted to be free. But that night he had a dream and it made him realizer it was a sign to convert himself and become a new man. That was his real motivation.

  7. Well after having a dream in jail when the voice said "turn to me"(page 36) The Pope was terrified of his old life, he changed his ways and stopped drinking. The pope became a man of God and Didn't fight with people anymore.

  8. He only said he would turn to god to get out of jail, but had a moment of realization when he had a dream. In that dream he was told to turn to god. And he did. He wanted to be a better father and husband. And let god help him do so.

  9. “The Pope” is making this change now because things were starting to get really bad; people were dying and being sent to jail, and he had almost killed a man. It wasn’t until after his most recent fight that got him arrested, that he decided to consider changing himself. He was told that he would probably be sent to jail and his friend didn’t want that to happen to him so he advised that “The Pope” really change his ways. He decided this was a good idea and agreed to find God. He didn’t really mean it until he had a nightmare about the entire ordeal. He didn’t do it sooner because he didn’t want to give up his ways because that is what he was used to and he liked it.

  10. The "Pope" was at the bar, and some guy walked in and wanted to fight. So, the "pope" accepted the challenge. The pope left the man in a puddle of blood and was arrested. Later that day, the pope got a visit from Minister Kabisa. Minister Kabisa told him, that he would be releast from jail if he turned himself over to god. The pope only agreed so that he could get out of jail. But later that night, he had a dream. In his dream, her saw only darkness, and a voice said to him, "these things will destroy you. Turn to me". The next day, instead of going to work, he went straight to the church. When the "Pope" got to the church, he went straight to reverand JJ and said, "im here, im ready".
